National Ski Areas Association
Sustainable Slopes is the flagship sustainability program of the National Ski Areas Association. This program provides a sustainability framework for ski areas, and provides guidance for sustainable practices across the operation. Ski areas participating in Sustainable Slopes pledge to action and advocacy on behalf of the environment.
NSAA Sustainable Slopes 2020
Adopted by the ski industry in 2000 and updated in 2020, NSAA's Sustainable Slopes initiative provides an overarching framework for ski areas on sustainability and enhanced environmental performance. Ski areas pledge to take steps across their operation to move toward sustainable practices.Sustainable Slopes - Climate Change Action
The Climate Change Action badge recognizes ski areas that have committed to developing greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and tracking them annually. Ski areas must have set goals for carbon reduction, implemented at least one reduction strategy per year, and reported on their results and activities.Sustainable Slopes - Climate Change Advocacy
The Climate Action Advocacy badge recognizes ski areas that have advocated for climate change solutions at the federal, state, or local level. They have endorsed a broad range of climate solutions campaigns, all supporting movement in policy to help solve climate change.Sustainable Slopes - Design & Construction
The Design and Construction badge recognizes ski areas that have considered the natural landscape and impact around a building or project, and taken significant steps to minimize their impact in the environment, from emissions to ecosystems.Sustainable Slopes - Education & Outreach
The Education and Outreach badge recognizes ski areas that have taken a leadership role in educating their guests, community, or other populations on sustainable practices, sharing their efforts and strategies that are essential to sustainability.Sustainable Slopes - Energy Management
The Energy Management badge recognizes ski areas that have implemented energy efficient techniques and increased the use of renewable energy within their operations. They have also supported decarbonization and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in their community through their innovative techniques.Sustainable Slopes - Forest Health & Habitat
The Forest Health and Habitat badge recognizes ski areas that have been responsible stewards of their surrounding natural habitats, from fish and wildlife to forests and vegetation, supporting ecosystems, public recreation opportunities and carbon sinks for greenhouse gasses.Sustainable Slopes - Supply Chain
The Supply Chain badge recognizes ski areas that have sourced products and materials in an environmentally responsible manner, significantly reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, and waste production.Sustainable Slopes - Transportation Emissions
The Transportation Emissions badge recognizes ski areas that have contributed to reducing fuel use and emissions on fleet vehicles and supported the use of low or zero emission vehicles, carpooling, and/or mass transportation to decrease on-road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.Sustainable Slopes - Waste & Recycling
The Waste and Recycling badge recognizes ski areas that have managed waste in a manner that reduces or eliminates greenhouse gas emissions and protects natural resources.
