Computers in the Workplace

In this 8-hr course, students learn about computer basics, including the parts of a computer, how to use word processing software such as Microsoft Word, how to use a spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel, how to search on the Internet, how to post to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and how to keep a computer in good working order. This course is for someone who has never used a computer or who has limited computer skills. This course is also useful for those who haven’t used a computer in years and would like to be brought up-to-speed on current software and maintenance requirements. This 6 hr course consists of 5 lessons: Lesson 1: Computer basics Lesson 2: Word processing software Lesson 3: Spreadsheets Lesson 4: Internet basics Lesson 5: Maintaining a computer

Skills / Knowledge

  • • Understand the basic components and functions of desktop and laptop computers (e.g. identify and describe the functions of the desktop, window, and taskbar; identify various peripheral equipment (e.g. mouse, keyboard, USB; recognize basic icons)
  • • Create, format, open, name, save and share a Microsoft Word file
  • • Describe what a spreadsheet is and how it is used in businesses; differentiate a workbook from a worksheet; create a spreadsheet with one or more worksheets; and use basic functions of Microsoft Excel
  • • Effectively use the internet to conduct search for information
  • • Post to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
  • • Describe what malware and viruses are and know how to avoid them
  • • Sit correctly at a computer to avoid injury
