Earning the NICP’s CPTED Professional Designation (CPD)
The NICP’s Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Professional Designation (CPD) certification is available to those who successfully complete 64 hours of Basic and Advanced CPTED training within 2 consecutive years through the NICP. The NICP courses are multi-disciplinary and provide the skills necessary to deliver comprehensive CPTED design recommendation, create corporate and community CPTED programs, and conduct assessments and make recommendations to governments and private sector groups.
Basic Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Course teaches the student how the proper design and effective use of the built and social environment can create a more productive use of space and a reduction of crime. The course incorporates plan review, report writing, presentation skills, lighting, planning & zoning, and behavioral management. Students will complete three graded hands-on application activities including conducting a CPTED field assessment and creating a presentation of findings and recommendations. This course concludes with the first of two exams needed to earn the CPD certification.
Advanced Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Course focuses on specialized topics such as parks, public art, schools, terror mitigation, site plan reviews, and color & human behavior – all utilizing CPTED concepts and strategies. Students will complete three graded hands-on application activities including a comprehensive CPTED design review and creating a presentation with design recommendations. This course concludes with the second of two exams needed to earn the CPD certification.
The NICP CPTED Professional Designation is valid for a period of four years.
The NICP will maintain a national database for those participants that earn the CPD. Those participants that are interested can be included in a searchable database for organizations, agencies, or companies searching for CPTED professionals.
