Western Diabetes Education Program (WDEP): Pregnancy - Preconception Care

ADELINE BINTI KASSIM

The prevalence of diabetes is increasing worldwide. Women with diabetes have a higher incidence of neonatal, foetal and maternal complications. Many of these risks can be reduced by maintaining optimal glycaemic control prior to and during pregnancy. Despite its importance, less than 50% of women with diabetes seek pre-conception care, partly due to unplanned pregnancies. This program is designed to increase awareness for the need of pre-conception care, as well as build knowledge and develop skills in all healthcare professionals to be involved in providing this care in the community. LEARNING OUTCOMES • Establish awareness for the importance of contraception and pre-conception care in reducing the risk of complications during pregnancy in women with diabetes • Demonstrate foundational level knowledge to enable provision of pre-conception care CPD time: 1 hour
