Art and Technology: From AI to NFTs

Debajyoti Samal

New technologies are fast changing the way art is made, enjoyed, and traded. From artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality to non-fungible tokens (NFTs), the rules of engagement, if there ever were any, are being radically rewritten. This course will delve into how these technologies work, what we can expect of them, and how to participate. Course participants will gain an understanding of how artists are incorporating technology into their practice, how augmented and virtual realities are playing out in museums, the role of social media in the rise of photogenic art, and what all the NFT buzz is about. The course will examine the operational side of art businesses, and the digital tools galleries, institutions, and auction houses have deployed to reach new audiences in an increasingly virtual world and will conclude with a short project for students to apply their knowledge.
