UBC Micro-certificate in Climate Action Planning: Foundations, Finance and Implementation

The UBC Micro-certificate in Climate Action Planning: Foundations, Finance and Implementation is a part-time online program that gives policy makers, planners and industry players the knowledge, skills and tools to put climate action planning into practice within organizations and communities
Developed by a team of faculty and experts associated with UBC’s Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, Sustainability Hub and Campus and Community Planning, this program is designed to create the climate champions that Canada and the world need.

Completion of the Micro-certificate indicates:

  • Understanding the basic science of climate change: its causes and consequences, and the case for climate action;

  • Familiarity with climate risk impacts and their associated data sources.

  • Ability to describe the disproportionate impacts of climate change on marginalized communities and the need for climate justice and indigenous involvement;

  • Knowledge of the key components of a climate action plan and the steps involved in developing a climate action plan.

  • Understanding of the role of stakeholder and community engagement as a key pillar in climate action and familiarity with the underlying factors contributing to effective CAP engagement and implementation strategies.

  • Introductory understanding of GHG inventories and their utility.

  • Awareness of the financial aspects of climate action planning including mitigation opportunities and costing methods, how to navigate financial constraints and integrate resiliency considerations with mitigation and net-zero goal.

  • Experience outlining a climate action plan for a selected community or organization
