How Today's Art World Works

Barbara Schlagbauer

Today’s art world is intimidating for many: record auction prices, invite-only private parties, and mega galleries exhibiting the newest celebrity artist. It feels exclusive and a difficult arena not only to enter but moreover to confidently navigate. It need not be like this. This 6-week course sheds light on many myths (and truths) surrounding the contemporary art world by taking it apart – and putting it back together again. The course will look at the ecosystem that supports the art world and introduce the different players that shape it – from museums and institutions to curators and writers, from galleries to auctions houses and online sales platforms, from the occasional buyer to the super collector – and last but not least it will review the role of the artist amongst it all. This course defines different professional roles in both the commercial and nonprofit sectors of the art world, and is ideal for those looking to make a career change or advance their role in the art world.
