The History/Social Science learning experience is designed for history, social science, and humanities educators (grades 6–12) to apply engaging, inquiry-based strategies that will increase students’ ability to think, read, and write like a historian. Participants will experience and design learning around rigorous Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR®) methodologies to scaffold learning to promote critical thinking and analysis of source material.
During this three-day 17-hour virtual learning experience comprised of pre-work, synchronous work, and semi-synchronous work, participants will be able to:
• Intentionally incorporate WICOR strategies and methodologies into their content curriculum in order to increase student engagement and support rigor.
• Scaffold rigor to ensure that all students have access to a deeper understanding of the History/Social Science content.
• Utilize WICOR strategies to deepen students' use of academic language.
• Model and coach reading and writing for disciplinary literacy in order to develop students’ capacity to comprehend and analyze complex texts and communicate from an understanding of multiple perspectives.
